Dos and don'ts for writing a CV

image
DO:
  • Type your CV and print it on plain white paper, using one simple font throughout.
  • Make sure you spell-check your CV thoroughly. Poor grammar and spelling will count against you.
  • Be realistic and sell your skills and achievements, how do they match the job you are applying for.
  • Use headings in bold or underlined text to highlight different sections of your CV and make it easy to read.
  • Your CV is a live document and should be updated when you change jobs, learn a new skill or achieve something new.
  • Ask someone to read over your CV and give constructive criticism. Ideally someone in the sector or someone who is an employer and is used to receiving CV’s.
DON'T:
  • Add your full address. Email address and contact details will suffice
  • Put a picture on your CV.
  • Write changes to you CV in pen. Amend it on a computer and reprint it.
  • Create a CV that is more than two pages long. Keep it precise and achievement focused
  • Type huge blocks of text – Use bullet points that demonstrate what you did and where possible how it matches the job you are applying for.
  • Include details and information are not relevance to the job or apprenticeship you are applying for.
  • Fold your CV. Use A4 envelopes where possible, to keep it in pristine condition.
